What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a proposed standard, introduced in 2024, for giving large language models (LLMs) a short, curated guide to a website. It is a plain Markdown file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt with a title, a one-line summary, optional background details and lists of links to the pages that best explain what you do.

The idea is simple: websites are full of navigation, scripts and adverts that are hard for AI tools to read within a limited context. A concise file that says “here is who we are and here are our best pages” makes it easier for an AI assistant to find accurate information about your business.

It is important to be realistic. llms.txt is not an official web standard, and the major AI search providers have not committed to reading it. Think of it as a low-effort, low-risk addition that may help some AI tools, developer assistants and agents today, not as a ranking factor. The foundations of AI visibility are the same as for search: clear, accurate, crawlable content and a consistent business presence across the web.

The file format

An llms.txt file has a simple structure:

  • A heading with your site or company name (the only required part).
  • A short summary written as a quote.
  • Optional paragraphs with key facts.
  • Sections with headings, each containing a list of links written as - Page title: short description.
  • An optional section named “Optional” for links that can be skipped when space is short.

The generator handles the formatting for you, so you only need to supply the content.

How to use the generator

  1. Enter your site or company name.
  2. Write a one-sentence summary: who you are, what you do and where. This is the most important line.
  3. Add details that an AI should know: service area, opening hours, the kind of customers you serve, and anything you do not offer.
  4. Fill in sections. For each link, type the page title, the full URL and a short description, separated by vertical bars: Drain cleaning | https://example.com/drain-cleaning/ | Same-day service.
  5. Add or remove sections as needed. Use “Optional” for nice-to-have pages.
  6. Check the warnings, then copy or download the file.
  7. Upload llms.txt to the root folder of your website and open it in your browser to confirm.

What to include

  • Your main service or product pages.
  • Pricing or “how we work” pages, if you publish them.
  • Your best guides that answer common customer questions.
  • About and contact pages, so assistants can describe and reach you correctly.
  • Policies people often ask about, such as delivery, returns or areas covered.

Leave out thin pages, tag archives, login areas and anything that is not useful to someone learning about your business.

Worked example

A tutoring company in Auckland writes this summary: “Qualified maths and science tutors for high school students in Auckland, in person and online since 2015.” Under Services it links its NCEA maths, physics and chemistry tutoring pages, each with a one-line description. Under Guides it links two popular articles on exam preparation. Under Company it links About, Prices and Contact. Under Optional it adds its blog archive. The finished file is about 25 lines long and takes two minutes to upload.

Best practices

  • Keep it short. Curate your best 10–30 links rather than listing every page.
  • Write descriptions that say what the page answers, not marketing slogans.
  • Use full, live URLs and check that each one loads.
  • Make sure facts match your website and your Google Business Profile.
  • Update the file when you add important pages or change services.
  • Keep it public and crawlable; do not block it in robots.txt.

Common mistakes

  • Treating llms.txt as a replacement for good on-page content or a sitemap.
  • Pasting the entire sitemap into the file.
  • Including outdated prices or services.
  • Using relative URLs instead of full addresses.
  • Writing a summary that does not say what the business actually does.

Tips for local businesses

For local businesses in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, the summary should state your service and your area plainly, the way a customer would ask an assistant: “Family-run electricians serving Leeds and West Yorkshire.” Include your contact page and any page that lists the towns or suburbs you serve. Consistent details across your website, llms.txt and Business Profile help any system, human or AI, describe your business correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Do Google or ChatGPT use llms.txt?

There is no public commitment from the major AI search providers to use it. Some AI tools and developer assistants read it, and adoption may grow, so it is a cheap addition rather than a guaranteed benefit.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. Robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access. llms.txt is a guide that points AI tools to useful content. To control which AI crawlers may access your site, use robots.txt.

Where do I upload the file?

In the root folder of your website so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On WordPress, upload it by FTP or your host’s file manager.

Can llms.txt hurt my SEO?

There is no evidence that it affects search rankings in either direction. Keep it accurate and avoid listing pages you would not want people to see.

How often should I update it?

Whenever you add or remove important pages, change services or prices, or update key facts such as your service area.
